Did you know that so-called brake stones were used as first traffic signs?
Brake stones were roadside stones that used to be mounted on top of steep hills.
Brake stones were roadside stones that used to be mounted on top of steep hills. The stones' head displayed the sign of coach skid brake (so-called šupka in Czech), a routine part of the equipment carried by carriages and coaches. Skid brakes were a piece of wrought iron with a groove to be chained by the driver to the rear wheel of the vehicle. It allowed the vehicle to slowly skid down the hill. As such, brake stones were the first traffic signs in this territory. Some of them can still be seen in the Czech Republic.
